義務教育9年が残り70年の「学び」を破壊する
皆さんは「勉強」と聞いて、どんな感情が湧きますか？
現在学校に通っている方、以前学校に通っていた方の中には、マイナスなイメージを持つ人も多いのではないでしょうか。これは現行の義務教育というシステムの改善すべき問題の1つともいえます。
私が思うに、要因の1つは義務教育が子供の「好奇心」「知識欲」「学習に対する姿勢」に悪影響を及ぼしていることです。物事を不思議に思う気持ちや「知りたい」という欲求は人間が生まれながらにして持つ素晴らしい能力です。
皆さんは子供の頃に「雨はどうして降るのか」「なぜ空は青いのか」「私という存在は何か」といった疑問を持ったことがあると思います。義務教育はこれらに対してある程度の「答え」をくれています。
しかし、大切なのは知りたい時に学べる環境であって、常に与えられる環境ではないのです。
もちろん、戦後の混乱期には人々の生活を維持するための大量生産に必要な労働者を育成する必要があり、戦後復興から高度成長期にかけて、義務教育が社会に与えた大きな貢献は決して忘れてはいけません。
しかし、科学と知識、富は既に飽和状態にあります。神の「見えざる手」が私たちにもたらしてきた豊かさは限界に到達しつつあります。そろそろ人類は私たち1人1人の幸福に舵を切っても良いのではないでしょうか。
現行の教育制度は既に破綻しています。私たちは自分自身の力で簡単に知識を手に入れることのできる環境に身を置いています。年齢に応じて一律の教育を施すことにももはや意味はないでしょう。
教育に必要なのは自発的な学びの支えとなる「補助」であって、大人のエゴや価値観を一方的に押し付けることではないのです。義務教育の果たすべき役割は9年間の軟禁ではなく、その後の70年に向けた準備なのです。
「生涯学習」という言葉が存在しますが、学びを行う上での意欲や姿勢といった感情的な部分に今の教育は明らかに悪影響を及ぼしています。子供の不信感が増幅する中で与え続ける意味はあまりないでしょう。
義務教育として学ぶべきことは実は多くはありません。すぐに「答え」を与える教育は段階的に成長する子供の「知的好奇心」を破壊していることを私たちがもっと自覚し、よりよいものになるよう努力を続けるべきでしょう。
